New Cyber Security Policy Strengthens Cook Islands Financial Security

The Cook Islands Cyber Security Policy 2024 – A comprehensive strategy designed to protect citizens, businesses, and critical infrastructure from cyber threats, enhancing national resilience and securing the financial services industry

The Cook Islands announced the release of its Cyber Security Policy 2024, marking a significant step in ensuring a secure digital environment for our citizens and financial services industry. The policy was officially launched during the Pacific Cyber Security Operational Network (PaCSON) Annual General Meeting (AGM) at The Edgewater Resort, with Minister Tingika Elikana delivering a powerful address on behalf of Prime Minister Mark Brown.

Minister Elikana, in his speech, emphasised:
“The core of the Cyber Security Policy is about protecting our people’s personal information, our country’s reputation, and our infrastructure. This policy ensures that our most sensitive information, critical infrastructure, and business operations remain secure in an increasingly interconnected world.”

“This policy underscores our commitment to protecting the privacy and security of clients within the wealth management industry, and enhancing our reputation as a well-governed global citizen.” stated Cook Islands Finance CEO Tony Fe’ao.

“The financial services sector is a key contributor to our economy. Growing cyber threats demand robust responses to safeguard both local and international clients.”

Key Highlights of the Cyber Security Policy:

      1. Protection for the Financial Sector – Recognising the importance of safeguarding sensitive financial data, the policy outlines strategies to mitigate risks from cybercriminals targeting our growing financial services industry.

      1. Global Commitment – The policy upholds the Cook Islands’ dedication to being a responsible member of the international community, aligning with the Boe Declaration on Regional Security and contributing to global cyber security initiatives.

      1. Strengthening Resilience – As part of the Government’s 2024 initiatives, the policy sets the groundwork for enhancing the resilience of government networks, critical infrastructure, and private sector entities from cyber threats.

      1. Collaborative Efforts – Through continued cooperation with New Zealand and regional partners, the policy ensures that the Cook Islands remains a leader in cyber security within the Pacific region.

The Cyber Security Policy addresses not only offshore cyber threats but also homegrown challenges, including online fraud and digital crime, underscoring the Cook Islands’ commitment to maintaining its status as a premier jurisdiction for asset protection and wealth management.
